Help!

I would like to buy Betty some new dvds for the occasions when I desperately need her to be entertained while I get on with cooking dinner etc etc. Has anyone got some good ideas on what a nearly three year old would love?

Our favourites are any of the Wallace & Grommet ones, Dumbo, any of the Disney cartoons really ... Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi

Or - but only if you don't mind driving yourself crazy - In The Night Garden, Charlie & Lola. Any of the C-beebies offerings usually go down well, actually. Also though Boy #2 absolutely loves The Blue Planet. Unlikely, I know, but you never know. And Crocodile Hunter is great favourite!

my grandaughters love all the disney princesses, the Barbie princess series, Madagascar and other disney classics. We've also pulled out seasame street, muppets, and Wallace and Grommet. the last three help their sense of humor, lots of giggles. They also like "the cat and mouse" as they call it. Tom and Jerry...sounds like all they do is watch TV! they don't but these are the ones we use. Also baby einstein's are a must.
My daughter checks a lot of them out from the library for variety.

Hi - I just had to comment on this one, because I have to tell someone about these! My niece when she was that age absolutely loved the Jellikins - I'd never seen them before, but she had two dvd's of them, and they are brilliant, good enough to watch yourself! The songs are so catchy. It's about 6 little jelly bears and a jelly dragon.
Ok, they might be a bit twee at first, but I promise you'll be singing and dancing along by the end ;) ...jellytastic, it's fantastic...
(Oh, and Rik Mayall does the voiceover - odd, but works perfectly!)

Mine are a little younger (eldest is 22 months), but I have a few of their favourite CBeebies programmes recorded for emergencies (In the Night Garden, Big Cook Little Cook, Something Special and Doodle Do). Actually that last one is for me. I love Doodle Do, especially Stick.

Get some old recordings of Eastenders and then she can watch her little sister bullying unsuspecting members of the East London public.

Why don't you go to the library, get a selection, and see what tickles Betty's fancy, before spending money? Children are so variable in their preferences.

Personally I like The Wiggles, but Betty might not share my taste.

Hi EB,
My two and a half year old and 5 year old LOVE Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Madagascar, Barney (I know, painful, but they love him), Angelina Ballerina,Tinkerbell, Shrek, A Bug's Life (great for adults too), Curious George, 101 Dalmations, Peter Pan and their current fave - Mama Mia. I kind you not. They are actually watching it right now. They LOVE the songs and the dancing. Peter Pan is my favourite Disney film. Really old fashioned and lovely. Good luck!
(they didn't like any Barbie films, Little mermaid (Ursula was too scary), not that we watch loads of DVDs or anything...(my excuse is the 4 hour trip up to see my folks, the portable DVD player is ace.)

Pocoyo. I love it. Daughter loves it.
All the other stuff I would have suggested has been mentioned, but Pocoyo is definitely amongst the top 3 at the moment (daughter is 2 1/2)

Flea has never been interested in Princess things and doesn't watch a lot of TV, but good DVD buys:

Peter Pan - she finds some of the Disney movies too scary (the shark in Little Mermaid, Cruella de Ville etc)and the story of others goes over her head, but Peter Pan seems a lot gentler. She loves it.

You can get DVDs called "Children's Favourites" which are 90 minutes of a variety of shows - Wiggles, Rubbadubbers, Barney, Kipper - they're only £4 at our local Dobbies garden centre - bargain!

My 3 year old girl always comes back to Thomas the Tank, Little Princess (v funny!), Mr Men and Bob the Builder. She also likes Peppa Pig, which I've only just discovered and find hilarious. I've also got the very hungry caterpillar & other stories, which is so lovely and gentle you don't even feel guilty putting on. She does like Kipper as well.

She is terrified of the Numberjacks and Brum though.

Kipper and Peppa Pig are our favourites. Try some of the old ones....mind you the updated version of Postman Pat is great.

Award for you over at mine. :)

Rosemary's current favourite is Willy Wonka (not the more recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). She's also very keen on Monsters Inc. If you're looking for something shorter, Charlie and Lola is pretty good. For something with more interactivity, Dora the Explorer or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse - I love listening to Rosemary shouting out things in Spanish, or 'That one! The round one!' to Mickey Mouse.

(And yes, she does watch far too much TV.)

I love Kipper, but I don't think most children do.

I had to come back with a thought for you. Why don't you see if your local charity shops have dvds? Much cheaper than buying them new (particularly now Woolies is no more - moment of silence please), and it's such a waste of money if they don't like the ones you buy.

Peppa Pig (she repeats) - we took about 5 DVDs for the flight to/from Canada but all he watched was Peppa Pig, all the way!

Good luck - but definitely try the library. Iota is both funny and right!

Kipper would be nothing without Martin Clune's voice. Most children don't have the advantage that their parents have, of being able to envisage Martin Clunes as a lovable dog, which is I think the attraction of Kipper.
